Autumnal Equinox (poster)

"Autumnal Equinox" (2014) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Liberec (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured in the Celtic Year series.

The Story Behind the Art

The Goddess of Autumn, seated upon a carpet of golden leaves, is presenting a rich harvest of ripe apples, pears, corn, nuts, pumpkins, wild mushrooms, rosehips, rowan berries, and of course, grapevines. She uses her mirror to reflect the sun's rays, which are becoming precious at this time of year. A fox-priestess, cloaked in autumn foliage, presents her with a bouquet full of goldenrod and asters.

Hidden Details to Discover

The autumnal equinox falls around September 23. Known in Celtic traditions as Mabon, Alban Elfed, or Meán Fómhair, it is the second day of the year when day and night are of equal length. From this moment, darkness begins to prevail. With the harvest safely gathered, people bid farewell to the warmth and abundance of summer with lavish feasts. Dressed in their finest attire, they celebrate with beer, mead, and wine, accompanied by the essential sounds of music and poetry.
