"Angel of Learning" (2012) is a colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová, created live in public in Pilsen (Czech Republic) as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This drawing is featured in the Angels for Each Month of the Year series.
The Story Behind the Art
The Angel of Learning introduced the art of writing to the elf school, where little elves are currently mastering the alphabet. Other subjects in this woodland classroom are taught by animals – math by a raven, nature studies by a cat, and art by a lynx. If learning were play, children would never lose their natural curiosity to seek answers to every question.
Hidden Details to Discover
Hidden within this artwork are all the letters of the alphabet and every digit, including zero. The artist added the zero specifically for a physicist who pointed out that, of course, mathematics wouldn't be complete without it.
