"Initiation Cave" (2013) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
From a cave hidden within maple leaves emerges a being both childlike and ancient, dazzled by the autumn sun. In her palm, she carries the unicorn of our lost childhood soul – from a time when the world still seemed beautiful and full of wonder. In the dim light of the cave behind them, colorful bubbles and fragments of rainbows float among hovering hummingbirds. A few of the birds have become entangled in her hair and in a dress woven from heather and blackberries. A black wizard cat stands as a guardian, demanding a silent oath before you may enter this whimsical realm.
