The Sun in Scorpio (greeting card)

"The Sun in Scorpio" (2015) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured in the artist's Astrology series.

The Story Behind the Art

The Sorcerer King straddles the line between light and darkness, gazing at us from his subterranean realm. He has plunged so deep, walking through glowing lava, watching gems bloom, tiptoeing past the hideouts of sleeping monsters, and witnessing the secrets of the Earth's core. He returns scarred, bringing treasure chests up into the sunlight. Every gemstone holds a power that will serve him, yet he has not yet decided how to use it. He can play the flute so enchantingly that others will follow him like mice followed the Pied Piper. He balances a diamond on the tip of his boot, and in the beauty of a rose, he also sees its transience. A white ship is arriving for him, luring aboard all the chosen ones who can lead mankind, though they rarely receive applause. Will he let it sail away, or will he step aboard?

Hidden Details to Discover

The Scorpio zodiac symbol can be found in the roots above the raven. A scorpion made of gold and precious stones guards the entrance to the underworld, but on the canvas, you will also find a scorpion’s sting beneath the chest, which seemingly belongs to the King himself. Malachite belongs to the sign of Scorpio and is said to protect humans from negativity. Notice that the raven holds a bunch of keys to the multiple gateways into the lower worlds. The ship bears the figure of an eagle on its prow—it is said that a realized Scorpio can transform into an eagle.
