"Where the Sun Lies" (2009) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This charming piece is featured as the cover illustration for the artist's children's book, Where the Sun Lies, which is also available in English.
The Story Behind the Art
There are days when even the Sun gets weary and decides to stay in bed for some well-deserved rest. She scatters her tangled, golden rays across the pillow, brews a warm cup of herbal tea, and turns off the alarm. While gloomy weather rules the earth below, the Sun stays tucked away in her cozy Cloud Cottage, reading her favorite books and listening to the soft tinkling of wind chimes. Slipping into cloud-soft slippers, she lets her cats crawl into bed with her and fills the feeder for the birds—the only visitors allowed inside her sanctuary.
