"The Sun in Gemini" (2015) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured in the artist's Astrology series.
The Story Behind the Art
Gemini are twins—the White and Black Kings sit together on a single throne. While the White King, Aesthetic, juggles words and releases doves into the world, the Black King, Sarcastic, sees the absurdity and futility of all actions, sketching caricatures of the Theater of the World. The White King easily wins people over and juggles ten things at once. The Black King always sees the dark side of things, terrified of passions and instincts that cannot be handled with kid gloves. He knows that experience cannot be replaced by theory. It is one thing to read, write, or talk about misfortune; it is quite another to experience it firsthand. Yet Gemini, as changeable as the colors of a peacock's feather, were not born for tragedy—even from the deepest trouble, their gift of wings will always lift them up.
Hidden Details to Discover
The Gemini zodiac symbol is etched onto the window. The signpost at the crossroads reveals all the directions a Gemini is drawn to, often leading in multiple ways at once. Their mind holds the contents of all the diverse books neatly aligned on the library shelves.
