"January Fairy" (2011) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This drawing is featured in the Fairies for Each Month of the Year series.

The January Fairy, Queen of the North, brings the ultimate gift of victory over winter—a season that tests our resilience and, metaphorically, our courage to be our true selves. On her journey through the freezing night beneath the Aurora Borealis, riding atop a polar bear's snowy fur, she is guided by the solidarity and deep friendship of a wolf pack.
Hidden Details to Discover
Look at the wolf pack! It follows a strict hierarchy. Within this pack, we find the alpha leader, who always carries his tail the highest, and the omega—the "court jester" of the group. Through playful antics, the omega diffuses tension at the end of a long hunt. Remarkably, the omega is the only wolf allowed to poke fun at the alpha.
