"February Fairy" (2014) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured in the Fairies for Each Month of the Year series.
The Story Behind the Art
The February fairy of crystal-clear winter days brings us the gift of vision, for when the leaves fall, unexpected vistas unfold. A Japanese dancer floats effortlessly above a frozen pond alongside a flock of herons, as reeds cast a calligraphy of bluish shadows upon the snow-covered ice.
Hidden Details to Discover
Unlike her usual dream-inspired works, Marie Brožová found the inspiration for this painting at a frozen pond near her home. The only things missing from the real-life scene were the February fairy and the strips of colorful kimono fabric spread across the ice.
