"Lughnasadh" (2014) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This drawing is featured in the Celtic Year series.
The Story Behind the Art

The Celtic harvest festival of Lughnasadh (also known as Lammas) celebrates the bounty of the Earth and the spirit of peace. Traditionally marked by the baking of ritual bread and fruit pies, it honors Mother Earth and the god Lugh—master of all arts and wisdom. This season serves as a symbolic moment for personal growth, setting intentions, and releasing old habits.
Hidden Details to Discover
The ornament in the drawing, a symbol of dedication and abundance, is woven from two strands highlighted by a contrasting color. The hands surrounding the sun disc can be interpreted as the healing touch of the high summer sun, while also symbolizing human labor – the very hands that must tend to the fields for the harvest to come. The golden sickle was a tool of the Druids, used to gather sacred herbs for their ancient rituals.
