"The Sun in Aries" (2015) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public at her famous Magic Pencil Gallery in the heart of Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches). This piece is featured in the artist's Astrology series.
The Story Behind the Art
The Sun is rising, the night fire is dying out, and the King of Fire and Sword is already on his feet. He cannot wait to awaken his army and set off for a new horizon. Testing his strength against the battering ram of the clouds in the sky, he has no rival but himself; his morning star is Mars, the god of war. He has no desire to settle down and live a life of comfort—his ultimate goal is to conquer new lands. Others will sow and reap. Neither his throne nor his castle has solid foundations; a folding chair and a nomad’s tent are all he needs. Even if he were to rule the entire world, he would start all over again, driven purely by the joy of conquest.
Hidden Details to Discover
The desert shoots are shaped like the symbol of Aries. This same symbol is emblazoned on the sword, the helmet, and the chest of the black stallion, who paws the ground in anticipation.
