"Black Panther of the Night" (2004) is probably the most celebrated colored pencil drawing by Prague artist Marie Brožová. This piece was created at the beginning of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils, proving the grand, oil-painting-like depth that can be achieved with this humble medium. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches), and required more than 150 hours of meticulous work, with prints now found on every inhabited continent.
The Story Behind the Art
The Black Panther embodies the mystery of the night as it wanders across the globe, bringing with it all the secrets that unfold after dark. Through the windows, we see that the night belongs to sleepers, dreamers, artists, passionate lovers, and sleepwalkers alike. Above, in the cosmic sky, planets of the Solar System reside, while sorcerers and witches soar through interstellar space.
