"Autumn Chessboard" (2014) is a colored pencil drawing by Marie Brožová, created live in public in Prague as part of her long-term project The Defense of Colored Pencils. The original artwork is an impressive A0 format, measuring 118.9 × 84.1 cm (46.8 × 33.1 inches).
The Story Behind the Art
The main theme explores the union of opposites and the harmony of contrasts. Rather than opposing each other on the chessboard, the Black Queen and White King stroll side by side, taking in the beauty of a golden autumn. They focus not on what divides them, but on what brings them together.
Hidden Details to Discover
This intricate drawing is a tribute to the artist’s grandfather, a master of chess. While his attempts to teach her the art of the royal game weren't successful, he left her with a lifelong enchantment with its aesthetic world. Look closely and you will find 17 chess pieces, including the King and Queen, hidden throughout the artwork.
Available as: Fine Art Prints (A4–A0), Gallery-Quality Posters (A2–A0), Greeting Cards, Postcards.
